Page 14 Continued from page 12 A few well-placed, high circular windows in the home give the eye a bright, momentary resting point and are reminiscent of what attracted so many winter visitors to the Valley – the glorious Arizona sun. Tucked beneath the kitchen is a basement where food would have been stored. It now houses a wine cellar and a bedroom for the dogs. The old tractor barn has been converted into an office, complete with a fireplace that utilizes the old trash incinerator chimney. Floor to ceiling bookshelves on every wall hold only a sampling of Jon’s extensive book collection. Also utilizing the incinerator chimney, outside the office and across the courtyard, is a wood burning pizza oven. A charming two-story, three-bedroom guesthouse overlooks the pool and since the Louis home was designed for a family of five rather than seven, three of the Hulburd children are fortunate enough to sleep there. Also adjacent to the pool is the home’s Arizona room, which was originally used by the Louis family for comfortable, open-air sleeping during warmer nights. This was common practice in Phoenix, in the days before air conditioning. In the center of the home was an atrium, which was lovely during the winter months. But because it captured too much heat during the summer, the Hulburds incorporated it into the interior, making it a library. Jon and Carrie are enthusiastic art collectors and have placed paintings throughout the home. Some artists represented are Kevin Sloan, Jim Davis, Jon Muth, sculptor Stephan Balkenhol, and the celebrated painter, Philip Curtis, founding director of the Phoenix Art Center, which became the Phoenix Art Museum. A painting by Stephen Polling hangs in the most classically honored place, over the fireplace in the living room. It was chosen by Carrie for its subject matter. Gaze out of the window next to it, and you’ll understand why. It’s reminiscent of what the view might have looked like before all of the residential development. Jon speculated, “I’m convinced that when Carrie’s grandparents had dibs on any of the lots, they tried to square up on the mountain. What we both love most about the house is its soul. It has a human scale that you don't see as much these days. After 20 years, it really does feel like home and our five kids love it as much as we do.” Jim Ebbert 480-298-4405 jimebbert@hotmail.com Your Dream Home Awaits 5161 E. The Murphys’ large moving truck had to squeeze down their back alley, and haul their belongings to the front of the new house. Matt also worked double time, preparing his new house and lending a helping hand to Dammen on her house. “It was a lot of work for a very short distance,” Matt said. But everyone agrees it was well worth it. In the end, the result was two neighbors with not only new homes, but also a special bond. Dammen soon became almost a part of the Murphys’ family, which has now grown to seven. Having no family in Arizona, Dammen spends holidays with the Murphys and has built a close relationship with the couple’s relatives and children. “Olivia is just a wonderful human being, who is so giving and so kind and Matt was tremendous during this whole thing and guided me the whole way,” Dammen said. And the Murphys feel the same way. “It was a huge deal of trust because we didn’t know her well at first,” Olivia said. “But now we’re like family.” She added, “She said when she is old and gray that we need to take care of her, and we will.” Today, with more than three years in their new homes, the neighbors feel that these are the homes they were meant to have. “It doesn’t even feel like I ever lived across the street,” Dammen said. “Even my cat, my goodness … she came across the street and never went back and cats just aren’t that way.” The Murphys also feel like their new house is their real home and are grateful that they could stay in their beloved neighborhood while making room for their five children. “It worked out great, so I don’t want to discourage anyone from doing this,” Matt said, “but it is harder than it seems to make it all work.” He added, “We just give a lot of credit to Debbie for coming up with the idea and having the courage to come out and say it.” PATRICK BURCH | 602.430.2032 | PATRICK@GORILLACAPITAL.COM | GORILLACAPITAL.COM Gorilla Capital purchases properties with cash, requiring no concessions, inspections, or repairs, and then renovates them into remarkable homes.
