Aspiring dancers, singers and actors can flex their creative muscles while growing artistically and socially. CHRISTIAN YOUTH THEATER (AGES 5-18) 20820 N. 25th Pl., Phoenix (480) 310-0366 CYTphoenix.org Held at North Bible Church in Scottsdale, Christian Youth Theater’s camp provides a diverse spectrum of musical theater experiences. Singing, dancing and acting classes are complemented with games and activities, all within a spiritual framework. The camp’s professional choreographers, music and dance instructors work closely with younger children and teens to prepare them for an end-of-week, high-energy showcase. This year’s production will highlight songs from the original and most recent Mary Poppins movie. The cost is $275 per week. DO RE MI offers a three-week program that immerses students in the world of musical theaters. Performances include The Fantasticks (high school age), Willy Wonka (3rd-7th grades), Alice in Wonderland (1st-2nd grades), and Moana (Pre-K-kindergarten). Children partake in singing, dance movement, crafts, and are visited by weekly guests such as magicians and balloon artists. Cost is $350-$750 per week and the camp is held from July 6-25. GREASEPAINT YOUTH THEATER (AGES 6-13) 7020 E. 2nd St., Scottsdale (480) 949-7529 greasepaint.org The winner of hundreds of awards from the National Youth Arts, Greasepaint Youth Theater provides classes that promise to pack a big punch with multiple genres of productions. These include The Lion King Kids (three weeks), Dancing Through the Decades (one week), Twice Upon a Time (two weeks) and a Science Fiction camp (one week), where kids write their own plays. There are classes in visual arts, painting, drawing, music and dance, and they culminate in end-of-week recitals. Kids get to showcase songs, dances, skits and visual arts as well. There are various camps open for specific age groups. Younger kids will learn to sing, dance and act out different productions depending on the week. There’s a musical camp, acting for television and film camp, and an audition preparedness camp for the older kids. Camps start in June through July. Sessions range from one to two weeks, half and full days and start from $169 a week. Kids will glean invaluable skills as they experience firsthand what it takes to create a full musical production from audition to performance. Professional teaching artists provide foundational training in acting, singing and dance to enhance their summer experience further. Theater games, audition preparation and improvisation classes round out the curriculum. The cost is $750 before May 1 and $775 after May 1.
