DESERT ‘GARDEN’ DESIGN Plant and garden experts from Berridge Nursery and On Site Landscape share their knowledge on creating an eye-catching desert landscape where the cacti and succulents are the stars. 3 There are a few surviving examples of Art Deco design in Phoenix that are alive and well – perhaps one of the most iconic is the Orpheum Theatre. Opened in 1929, the building was designed by architects Lescher and Mahoney in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with Art Deco elements added throughout: a chandelier, elaborate plasterwork, and a painted ceiling that imitates a starry sky. Originally built as a vaudeville and movie palace, the Orpheum has served various roles over the decades, including hosting live performances and film screenings. Within Phoenix, there is a group of people dedicated to preserving Art Deco in its many elements – not just design, but the bold fashion statements and jazz tunes that embodied the 1920s and 30s. Phoenician Erin Lindsey started the nonprofit a little over a year ago and since then, the Phoenix Art Deco Society is keeping the jazz age alive with immersive tours, events and preservation opportunities.
